Across Asia Film Festival
Across Asia Film Festival is an international film event focusing on the independent languages of the very recent Asian film production. It delves into the production of a single country or on circumscribed geographical areas each year, showing Asia’s great contribution in terms of experimentation, aesthetic research and linguistic innovation on the world stage, increasingly gaining international relevance.
Artistic direction is provided by Stefano Galanti and Maria Paola Zedda.
From 2013 to present, Across Asia Film Festival dedicates its programming to independent scenes and arthouse cinema through focuses on specific movements and geographic areas, showcasing the prolific output of Asian cinema, dialoguing with filmmakers and institutions such as Asian Film Archive in Singapore, the largest film archive in Asia that connects, preserves and promotes productions from across the continent, with which it establishes special programs, UP Film Institute, Contagious Inc., and RCW Foundation Inc.Manila.
Its programming features a relevant number of international works (about 90 percent of the programming), many of them national and European premieres, subtitled in Italian and English to allow foreign nationals, as well as users with sensory disabilities, to enjoy them.
Its increasingly established international character today is evidenced by its collaboration with the English magazine Asian Movie Pulse, which has been accompanying the festival for the past two years with in-depth reports, interviews and focuses; its relationship with embassies, international cultural centers (Goethe Institut in Hanoi, Lixianting Film Fund – Beijing, Beijing Indepedent Film Festival, CaoChangdi Workstation); and a dialogue with international universities investigating experimental cinema. In Italy, he collaborates with MAXXI – Museum of XXI Century Arts, with MUDEC – Museum of Cultures in Mila no, BIG Bari Independent Film Festival, Nuovo Cinema Armenia, CareOF.
The festival aspires to be a moment of community, a pathway attentive to transdisciplinary trajectories, the relationship between cinema and visual arts, and the formation of new generations of filmmakers in the area.
Its base of operations is in Cagliari and Rome, but it expands regionally over several cities in Sardinia (Calasetta, Quartu and Sassari) and takes on nomadic characters in several editions.
